Migrating data to a VMware private cloud requires the use of an application to communicate between the VM servers and the public or private cloud. Users of VSphere or VCloud Director have access to a utility called VMware VCloud Connector that is a free resource from VMware.
Products such as the VMware VCloud Connector allow data to be copied back and forth between the data center and virtualized servers in the VMware Private Cloud. Applications may also be run from within the cloud and moved back into the data center as needed.
VMware vCloud connecting utilities can be run in the data center as a client or in the cloud itself through a browser. The first step in migrating data with these tools is to set up the cloud information in both places, should both tools (client and browser) tools be used. One or more clouds may be registered in each tool. This allows data and applications to be moved between data center and the clouds as well as between two or more clouds.
Templates are used to identify the structure of data and virtual machines to the cloud. Templates are mapped to virtual machines and may be used to create additional virtual machines on other physical devices and clouds. Once a template is created it is used to copy or move virtual machines to the various clouds.
The connector utilities then allow easy management of these templates to control the content in each cloud. The next steps include a cloud readiness assessment of your IT infrastructure and support functions, as well as an assessment of the organizational structure of the IT department.
