American Centers for Medical and Medicaid Services or what is popularly abbreviated as CMS, has rightly targeted the inter-connectivity amongst the health-care practitioners using certified Electronic Health Records (EHR) and the proposed objectives of stage 2 of meaningful use. Stage 2 of the Electronic Health Record comes with a few major changes and lets’ take a closer look at what these changes are and how it will affect the all new and structured EHR.
How is the Stage 2 different from Stage 1?
The proposed objectives are more or less similar; expect for 2 major changes as per CMS fact-sheets. American Centers for Medical and Medicaid EHR Incentive programs covers incentive and expenses to those suitable hospitals, professionals and critical-access hospitals that implement, upgrade and adopt meaningful use of the much hyped next-generation EHR technology.
The 2nd Stage of meaningful use is all about emphasizing inter-connectivity of patient engagement in Electronic Health Records. The main focus of Stage 2 of meaningful use is the electronic capture of relevant health-information, data-portability, improved transparency and then nurturing data-exchange at the time of care-giving.
One of the new elements introduced in the Stage 2 of meaningful use is the capability to record the family history of the patient as a very structured data with the help of a web based tool called the- My Family Health Portrait Tool. It is printable and comes in languages other than English too.
However, in this case the major hard work is to be done by the health professionals and care providers instead of the vendors, as was in the case of Stage 1. Stage 2 calls for more detailed data collection- often more than what would be captured on the EHR software.
The Stage 2 of meaningful use of the EHR Incentive includes 17 core objectives along with 3 of 5 menu objectives using the standards proposed officially in Federal Register by CMS. This consumer-facing tool will help capture important data from paper and transfer to a very structured input that will benefit all in the long run.
