The Challenge
In 2008, Embarcadero had approximately 500 employees and servers in 12 offices around the world. Embarcadero’s goals were to perform a hardware refresh, reduce their hardware footprint, improve on their business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities and provide greater collaboration across the environment especially for global development initiatives. Under normal operating circumstances, these goals would require meticulous planning and flawless execution. In Embarcadero’s case, they also needed to integrate a new acquisition, conduct multiple global office moves and a migration of all the company’s data centers.
The Solution
Utilizing Paranet’s Compass Methodology™ (its model for managing Information Technology to meet business objectives), an in-depth analysis of the client’s environment was conducted. The assessment functioned as both the roadmap for future growth, as well as a snapshot of the client’s current IT infrastructure.
Paranet deployed a comprehensive four-phased approach to achieve the desired end-state goals. Phase one centered on network standardization and implementation of a global MPLS network in order to provide a solid communication (voice and data) foundation. Phase two concentrated on improving collaboration across the network by utilizing Distributive Files Services (DFS) and SAN replication technologies. Phase three addressed consolidation, migration, integration, and incorporated a hardware refresh initiative that enhanced Embarcadero’s virtualization capabilities. Phase four focused on improving business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities by leveraging technology solutions that were already in place, including virtualization, SAN replication and DFS.
The Results
Paranet and the Embarcadero infrastructure team were able to rollout all four phases with no impact to operational activities, and achieve a virtualization ratio of approximately 35:1 for most server areas. The rollout was deployed in a way that eliminated sales and operational outages. Paranet was also able to lower Embarcadero’s annual operational datacenter expenses by 1/3.
